Paul Armstrong has whispered into the ear of Gary Lineker, Des Lynam and witnessed live many of the greatest sporting moments of our time. As the former editor of BBC’s Match Of The Day, Paul describes his former job title as “Worrier In Chief”. “It did turn me into an anxious person”. Becoming the editor of a program, familiar to millions was Paul’s ‘dream job’. Within his first 6 months he had to handle the coverage of the Hillsborough disaster, where 96 football fans tragically lost their lives. There were other stressful moments; presenters not realising they were live! This was pre-social media and the level of scrutiny was less; “We kinda got away with it” muses Paul. Matches running over scheduled time with controllers screaming in his ear, threatening to cut because Doctor Who was starting. Or his biggest moment of panic when – during the “Steven Gerrard Cup Final of 2006” – with 2 Billion people watching around the world – he had to persuade an un-impressed and non-football loving controller in his left ear that his threat to cut and switch to the scheduled news bulletin before Liverpool had lifted the cup after extra time and penalties was not a good idea. It was a close call! Persistent hearing issues forced Paul to step away from his dream job and completely re-invent his life; “I’ve learned that I can survive better than I thought I could, away from what I would have thought was my ‘life support machine’, which was BBC Sport”. Paul started to take pleasure in the smaller things; writing, music, cricket, Buddhist mindfulness sessions. An all round slower pace of life ensued. “You have to move on. Keep on keeping on,” advises Paul.”If you think you know what will happen in 5 years time…you don’t! And that’s not necessarily a bad thing”. This is a podcast about life’s twists and turns as much as it is about sport, and one well worth a listen.
